Our ninth principle is lure the tiger out of the mountains. The strategy: Entice a formidable adversary to seek an engagement on your terms. Why: Engaging an adversary on your terms maximizes the advantages you have. Sun Tzu said that whichever army reaches the battlefield first “will be fresh for the fight” and the second army will be left to “hasten into battle” after arriving exhausted (VI.1). The thing to do, then, is to always arrive first: “Therefore, the clever combatant imposes his will on the enemy and does not allow the enemy’s will to be imposed on him” (VI.2). This strategy has you maximizing your advantages by forcing the adversary to fight according to your will.
